An Open Letter To Stephen Beale of The Steampunk Explorer

Dear Stephen,

So after the Wicked World’s Fair, I was pretty devastated.

When you interviewed me, your absolute refusal to listen to any of my sources or facts made me think you were going to write something I wouldn’t want to read. And to my later shame, I wouldn’t read it for years. I wish I had.

I thought it would be hopeless, that Stephen would have taken the facts and just used them selectively.

Nope! This is basically just a fabrication. It’s inaccurate to the point where either Stephen’s not actually a journalist, or the inaccuracy is intentional.

Stephen, your article isn’t merely biased, and it isn’t just inaccurate. It’s a hit piece. And as far as I can tell, sincerely, you’re lying on purpose. You’re not just reporting on what happened with a negative slant; you’re reporting the worst rumors and most scandalous-looking moments.

When you offered me a chance to ‘respond’ to my own allegations, you insisted on editing and censoring my responses. I thought, at the time, it was incredibly biased journalism, since I do consider you a journalist. It wasn’t; it was just you making sure nothing interfered with your narrative.

Let me stress this point:

As far as I can tell, you deliberately worked very hard to make a major, authoritative article which misled people about me, and about what happened, without permitting critical details.

Here. Have almost 14,000 words, with documentation and receipts, responding to your ‘article’:

A Response To The “Steampunk Explorer” – Jeff Mach

So, Stephen:

I will offer you a courtesy you haven’t offered me.

My email is [email protected].

I’ll give you free reign, and I’ll post your response on my site. Go ahead. Respond to me. Defend your attack on me. Defend any part of it. I’m not a journalist, and I don’t know everything; if I got something wrong, tell me, or even come a me.

I’ll post your response verbatim. Just tell me what it is.

If you have any response at all.

If you won’t respond, that’s on you. Your article has been rebutted; if you can’t reply to the errors in your article, I’d like you to take it down, please.

Yours,

Jeffrey Peter Mach
